Brown University students to return to class for first time since deadly shooting

Reporters Sarah Bawden and Kayla Fish of WPRI reported on Brown University students beginning their return to campus and classes for the first time since the December 13 shooting that killed two students and wounded nine others.

Students interviewed described a mix of emotions including sadness, unease, and that the campus “feels different”. In contrast, others mentioned feeling relieved to be back with classmates and routines.

Brown University has also implemented new safety measures in response to the shooting, including:

  • Increased visible police presence

  • Expanded blue light emergency call stations and security cameras

  • Requiring ID card access for campus buildings
